Adverbs vs Adjectives

Adjectives describe a person, feeling, thing, or situation. They tell us what someone or something is like.

Example: She is happy.
[Sie ist glücklich.]

Here, happy describes she. So we need an adjective.

Adverbs describe an action. They tell us how someone does something. Many adverbs end in -ly.

Example: She smiled happily.
[Sie lächelte glücklich.]

Here, happily describes smiled. So we need an adverb.

Simple Rule

be / feel / look / seem + adjective
Example: He looks excited.

action verb + adverb
Example: He talked excitedly.

Adjective = What is the person like?
Adverb = How does the person do something?
