Zero vs. First Conditional: The Difference

Both use if + present simple. The difference is in the second half: is it a general fact or a specific future situation?
[Beide beginnen mit if + Present Simple. Der Unterschied liegt in der zweiten Satzhälfte: allgemeiner Fakt oder konkrete Situation in der Zukunft?]

Zero conditional = If + present simple, present simple
[Nullkonditional = If + Present Simple, Present Simple]

First conditional = If + present simple, will + verb
[Erstes Konditional = If + Present Simple, will + Grundform]

Example: If you heat water to 100°C, it boils. / If it rains tomorrow, I will take an umbrella.
[Beispiel: Wenn man Wasser auf 100 °C erhitzt, kocht es. / Wenn es morgen regnet, werde ich einen Regenschirm mitnehmen.]

Type When do we use it? Signal words Result Example
Zero Always true: facts, rules, habits[immer wahr: Fakten, Regeln, Gewohnheiten] always, usually, every time, in general present simple If you heat metal, it expands.
First One specific situation in the future[eine bestimmte Situation in der Zukunft] tomorrow, tonight, next week, this afternoon will + verb If I finish early tonight, I will call you.

Key tip: ask yourself

Is it always true – for everyone, every time? → zero conditional
If babies are hungry, they cry.
[Das passiert immer → Present Simple]

Is it about one particular situation that may happen soon? → first conditional
If the baby wakes up tonight, I will feed her.
[Eine konkrete Situation in der Zukunft → will]

Note: native speakers sometimes use „will“ for facts too (If you drop a glass, it will break.) – but for general truths, the present simple is the standard choice. Practise that here.
[Hinweis: Muttersprachler sagen bei Fakten manchmal auch „will“ – der Standard ist aber das Present Simple.]

Common Mistakes: no „will“ after „if“!

❌ If it will rain tomorrow, I will take an umbrella.
✅ If it rains tomorrow, I will take an umbrella. [kein „will“ im if-Satz]

❌ If I will have time, I will call you.
✅ If I have time, I will call you.

❌ If I have time tomorrow, I call you.
✅ If I have time tomorrow, I will call you. [konkrete Zukunft → will]

Why? In German, the present tense often describes the future: „Wenn ich morgen Zeit habe, rufe ich dich an.“ In English, a specific future result needs will – but the if-clause stays in the present simple.
[Merkregel: Im if-Satz kein „will“ – aber im Hauptsatz für die konkrete Zukunft „will“.]

Practice: Choose the correct form

Is it always true (zero conditional) or a specific future situation (first conditional)?
[Ist es immer wahr oder eine konkrete Situation in der Zukunft?]
