Present – Permanent & Non-Permanent Situations

Simple Present and Present Progressive

1. The Basic Difference

In English, we often use two different present forms: the Simple Present and the Present Progressive. They both talk about the present, but they do not mean exactly the same thing.

The Simple Present is used for things that are normally true, regular, repeated, or permanent. The Present Progressive is used for things that are happening now, around now, or only for a limited time.

Simple Present
Use it for habits, routines, facts, and permanent situations.
Example: She lives in Cologne.
Sie wohnt in Köln.
Present Progressive
Use it for actions happening now or temporary situations.
Example: She is living with her sister this month.
Diesen Monat wohnt sie bei ihrer Schwester.

2. Simple Present

KEY IDEA: normally, usually, always, often, every day, generally, never

Use the Simple Present when something is regular or normally true. It does not mean that the action is happening exactly now. It describes a habit, a routine, a fact, or a stable situation.

Habits and routines
He usually has breakfast at 7. Er frühstückt gewöhnlich um 7 Uhr.
General facts
Water boils at 100°C. Wasser kocht bei 100°C.
Permanent situations
She lives in Cologne. Sie wohnt in Köln.
Schedules and timetables
The lesson starts at 9. Der Unterricht beginnt um 9 Uhr.

3. Present Progressive

KEY IDEA: now, at the moment, today, this week, this month, currently

Use the Present Progressive when something is happening now or around the present time. It can also describe a temporary situation, even if the action is not happening at the exact second of speaking.

Happening now
He is having breakfast now. Er frühstückt gerade.
Temporary situation
She is living with her sister this month. Diesen Monat wohnt sie bei ihrer Schwester.
Around now
We are going to the gym this week. Diese Woche gehen wir ins Fitnessstudio.
Changing situation
English is becoming more important. Englisch wird immer wichtiger.

4. Important Contrast

Simple Present Present Progressive
He works in Berlin.
Er arbeitet in Berlin. This sounds like his normal job or regular situation.
He is working in Berlin this week.
Diese Woche arbeitet er in Berlin. This sounds temporary.
She lives in Cologne.
Sie wohnt in Köln. This sounds permanent or normally true.
She is living in Cologne for three months.
