We use the present perfect simple for completed actions with a result in the present, experiences and quantities.

China has increased its copper imports.
The increase has already happened, and the result is important now. [China hat seine Kupferimporte erhöht.]

We use the present perfect progressive for activities that started in the past and are still continuing. It can also describe a recent activity with a visible result. It often emphasises the duration of an activity.

China has been increasing its copper imports for several months.
The activity started in the past and is still continuing. [China erhöht seit mehreren Monaten seine Kupferimporte.]

Past Perfect Simple and Past Perfect Progressive

The past perfect simple describes an action that was completed before another event in the past.

The company had installed 80 turbines before the wind farm opened.
The installation was completed before the wind farm opened. [Das Unternehmen hatte 80 Turbinen installiert, bevor der Windpark eröffnet wurde.]

The past perfect progressive emphasises how long an activity had been continuing before another past event.

The technicians had been working for six months before the project was delayed.

Remember:

Use the simple form when the result, quantity or completed action is important.

Use the progressive form when the activity, development or duration is important.
