First vs. Second Conditional

We use conditionals to say what happens if a condition is met.
[Mit Konditionalsätzen sagen wir, was passiert, wenn eine Bedingung erfüllt ist.]

First conditional = If + present simple, will + verb
[Erstes Konditional = If + Present Simple, will + Grundform]

Second conditional = If + past simple, would + verb
[Zweites Konditional = If + Past Simple, would + Grundform]

Example: If I have time, I will call you. / If I had time, I would call you.
[Beispiel: Wenn ich Zeit habe, rufe ich dich an. / Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dich anrufen.]

Type When do we use it? if-clause Result Example
First Real and likely in the future[real und wahrscheinlich] present simple will + verb If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.
Second Unreal, unlikely or imaginary[unwirklich, unwahrscheinlich, vorgestellt] past simple would + verb If I were a millionaire, I would buy a spaceship.

Real or imaginary? Ask yourself:

Do I think this can really happen? → first conditional
If I pass the exam, I will celebrate.
[Ich halte es für möglich.]

Is it only a dream or very unlikely? → second conditional
If I won the lottery, I would stop working.
[Das ist sehr unwahrscheinlich.]

If I were … – in the second conditional, we use were for all persons: If I were you, I would take the job.
[Im zweiten Konditional steht „were“ für alle Personen.]

Common Mistakes: no „would“ and no „will“ after „if“!

❌ If I would go there, I would visit the museum.
✅ If I went there, I would visit the museum.

❌ If she would have more time, she would learn Spanish.
✅ If she had more time, she would learn Spanish.

❌ If it will rain tomorrow, we will stay at home.
✅ If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.

Why? In German, würde can appear in both halves: „Wenn ich hingehen würde, würde ich das Museum besuchen.“ English does not allow this.
[Merkregel: „If“ und „would“ (oder „will“) stehen nie in derselben Satzhälfte.]

Exception for advanced learners: in polite requests, „if you would“ is correct, e.g. If you would follow me, please. Here „would“ means „be willing to“ – it is a request, not a conditional.
[Ausnahme: höfliche Bitten – das ist keine Bedingung.]

Practice: Choose the correct form

Is the situation realistic (first conditional) or imaginary/unlikely (second conditional)?
[Ist die Situation realistisch oder eher unwahrscheinlich bzw. nur vorgestellt?]
