Zero vs. Second Conditional: Fact vs. Fantasy

The zero conditional describes real life: cause and effect. The second conditional is for dreams: how things could be different.
[Das Zero Conditional beschreibt die Realität: Ursache und Wirkung. Das Second Conditional ist für Träume: wie es anders sein könnte.]

Zero conditional = If + present simple, present simple
[Nullkonditional = If + Present Simple, Present Simple]

Second conditional = If + past simple, would + verb
[Zweites Konditional = If + Past Simple, would + Grundform]

Example: If you drop a stone, it falls. / If I were a bird, I would fly to Africa.
[Beispiel: Wenn man einen Stein fallen lässt, fällt er. / Wenn ich ein Vogel wäre, würde ich nach Afrika fliegen.]

Type When do we use it? if-clause Result Example
Zero Facts: it is always true[Fakt: Es ist immer so] present simple present simple If you freeze water, it turns into ice.
Second Fantasy: unreal or unlikely[Fantasie: unwirklich oder unwahrscheinlich] past simple would + verb If I had wings, I would fly to work.

Fact or fantasy? Ask yourself:

Is it always true – in science, in nature, in everyday life? → zero conditional
If you multiply any number by zero, the result is zero.
[Immer wahr → Present Simple in beiden Satzhälften]

Is it a dream, or impossible right now? → second conditional
If I could travel in time, I would visit the dinosaurs.
[Nur vorgestellt → Past Simple + would]

If or when? For things that definitely happen, we often use when: When winter comes, the days get shorter. For the second conditional, use only if.
[Für sichere, regelmäßige Ereignisse oft „when“; beim Second Conditional nur „if“.]

Common Mistakes:

❌ If you heat water to 100°C, it would boil.
✅ If you heat water to 100°C, it boils. [Fakt → Present Simple]

❌ If I would be rich, I would buy a castle.
✅ If I were rich, I would buy a castle. [kein „would“ nach „if“]

❌ If I won the lottery, I will buy a private island.
✅ If I won the lottery, I would buy a private island. [Past Simple + would gehören zusammen]

Why „If I would“ is wrong: in German, würde can appear in both halves („Wenn ich reich sein würde, würde ich …“). English does not allow this.
[Merkregel: „If“ und „would“ stehen nie in derselben Satzhälfte.]

Practice: Choose the correct form

Is it a fact (zero conditional) or fantasy (second conditional)?
[Ist es ein Fakt oder Fantasie?]
