Simplified rules for using each conditional tense

Zero Conditional:

  • When to use: Use this when talking about general truths or facts. 
    • (Wann zu verwenden: Verwenden Sie diese Zeitform, wenn Sie über allgemeine Wahrheiten oder Fakten sprechen).
  • Structure: If + present simple, present simple.
  • Example: If you heat ice, it melts.

First Conditional:

  • When to use: Use this when talking about real possibilities or predictions in the future.
    • (Wann zu verwenden: Verwenden Sie diesen Ausdruck, wenn Sie über reale Möglichkeiten oder Vorhersagen für die Zukunft sprechen).
  • Structure: If + present simple, will + base verb.
  • Example: If it rains tomorrow, we will stay indoors.

Second Conditional:

  • When to use: Use this when talking about unreal or unlikely situations in the present or future.
