Grammar Explanation

Use the Simple Present for state verbs such as like, love, hate, need, want, seem, sound, smell. These verbs usually describe a feeling, need, preference, or sense.

Use the Present Progressive for active verbs when something is happening now or around now. Some verbs can change meaning: smell can describe a state, but is smelling can describe an action.
