Simple vs Continuous (Progressive) – Clear Explanation
Core idea
Simple = fact / routine / repeated action / complete event

Continuous = in progress / temporary / happening around a moment
[Continuous = im Verlauf / vorübergehend / passiert rund um einen bestimmten Moment]
1) Simple Tenses = Facts, Habits, Repeated Actions, Complete Events
We use the simple form when something is:
- a routine or habit
- a general fact
- a repeated action
- a state
- a complete event
Present Simple
I drink coffee every morning.
[Ich trinke jeden Morgen Kaffee.]
→ This is a daily routine.
Past Simple
I drank coffee yesterday.
[Ich habe gestern Kaffee getrunken.]
→ This is a complete event in the past.
State Verb
I know the answer.
[Ich kenne die Antwort.]
→ Some verbs describe states and usually use the simple form.
2) Continuous (Progressive) = Action in Progress, Temporary, Developing
We use the continuous form when something is:
- happening right now
- in progress at a specific moment
- temporary or not permanent
- happening around this period
- developing or changing
- interrupted by another action in the past
Present Continuous
I am drinking coffee right now.

→ The action is happening at this moment.
Temporary Situation
I am working in Berlin this month.

→ This is temporary, not permanent.
Past Continuous
I was drinking coffee when you called.

→ The action was in progress when another action happened.

Continuous does not always mean “right now”. It can also mean around this time, temporary, or developing.
