Conditional Sentences (If-Sentences)
Conditional sentences describe a condition and its result.
(Konditionalsätze beschreiben eine Bedingung und ihr Ergebnis.)
They usually have two parts:
(Sie bestehen normalerweise aus zwei Teilen:)
if-clause = the condition
(If-Satz = die Bedingung)
main clause = the result
(Hauptsatz = das Ergebnis)
1. Zero Conditional
We use it for things that are generally true or that happen regularly.
(Wir benutzen es für Dinge, die allgemein wahr sind oder regelmäßig passieren.)
Form: if + present simple, present simple
(Form: if + Simple Present, Simple Present)
Example: If it rains, we stay inside.
(Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir drinnen.)
2. First Conditional
We use it for real or possible future situations.
(Wir benutzen es für reale oder mögliche Situationen in der Zukunft.)
Form: if + present simple, will + verb
(Form: if + Simple Present, will + Verb)
Example: If the weather is good tomorrow, we will go to the beach.
(Wenn das Wetter morgen gut ist, gehen wir an den Strand.)
3. Second Conditional
We use it for imaginary, unreal or unlikely situations.
(Wir benutzen es für gedachte, unrealistische oder unwahrscheinliche Situationen.)
Form: if + past simple, would + verb
(Form: if + Simple Past, would + Verb)
Example: If I had more time, I would stay longer.
(Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich länger bleiben.)
The if-clause can come first or second.
(Der If-Satz kann am Anfang oder am Ende stehen.)
Example: If it rains, we will stay inside.
(Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir drinnen.)
Example: We will stay inside if it rains.
(Wir bleiben drinnen, wenn es regnet.)
