Questions with BE
State, description, identity, and location
We use is / are when the sentence has the verb to be.
Example: Is he tired?

For German speakers:
If the sentence is about a state, description, identity, or location, you usually use is / are in the question.
is = singular form of be
[is = Singularform von „sein“]
Is she your teacher?
[Ist sie deine Lehrerin?]
are = plural form or you form of be
[are = Pluralform oder Form mit „du / ihr / Sie“ von „sein“]
Are they ready?
[Sind sie bereit?]
Simple memory help:
If there is no action verb like work, live, or play, and the sentence is just about “being”, use is / are.
Typical question areas are:
tired – ready – open – at home – hungry – correct – free
They show that we are talking about a state or description, not an action.
