"Yet," "Since," and "For"

Simple Explanation of When to Use "Yet," "Since," and "For":

1. "Yet"

Use: When talking about something that hasn’t happened but is expected or when asking if it has already happened.
Placement: Usually at the end of a sentence or question.

Examples:

  • Negative sentences: "I haven’t finished my homework yet."

  • Questions: "Have you eaten lunch yet?"

Tip: Use "yet" in the present perfect tense.

2. "Since"

Use: To talk about when an action started (a specific point in time).
Placement: After "since," mention a specific point in time (a year, date, or event).
Often used with: Present perfect tense.

Examples:

  • "I have lived in this city since 2010."

  • "We’ve been friends since high school."

Tip: Think of "since" as answering "from when?"

3. "For"

Use: To talk about the duration of time (how long an action has been happening).
Placement: After "for," mention a period of time (days, months, years, etc.).
Often used with: Present perfect tense.

Examples:

  • "I’ve been waiting for 2 hours."

  • "They have been married for 10 years."

Tip: Think of "for" as answering "how long?"

  • "For" = Duration of time
