Ability, permission, requests, and possibility
We use can to ask about ability, permission, requests, and possibility.
Example: Can you swim?

For German speakers:
Use can when you want to ask if someone is able to do something, if something is possible, or if you want to ask politely.
can = ability / permission / request / possibility
[can = Fähigkeit / Erlaubnis / Bitte / Möglichkeit]
Can she drive?
[Kann sie Auto fahren?]
Can I sit here?
[Kann ich hier sitzen?]
Important:
After can, we use the base form of the verb.
Can he help? ✅

Simple memory help:
If the idea is can / be able to / be allowed to, use can.
Typical verbs are:
help – swim – drive – come – stay – hear – explain – carry
They show that we are talking about ability, permission, polite requests, or possibility.
