- By refers to a deadline — something happens before or at a specific time.
- Until refers to the duration — something continues up to a specific time.
How to Use "By":
- Use "by" when you are talking about when something will happen. It shows the latest point in time something can be done.
- I need to finish the report by 5 PM.
(I can finish it at any time before 5 PM, but not later than 5 PM.) - The train will arrive by noon.
(The train could arrive earlier, but no later than noon.) - Send me the documents by Friday.
(You can send them any time before or on Friday.) - You should pay the bill by the end of the month.
(The latest time to pay is the last day of the month.)
How to Use "Until":
- Use "until" when you are talking about how long something continues. It emphasizes the duration of an action or state.
- I will work until 5 PM.
(I will keep working, and I will stop at 5 PM.) - The shop is open until midnight.
(The shop will remain open, and it will close at midnight.) - She stayed at the party until everyone left.
(She stayed there the whole time, leaving only when everyone else was gone.) - We can’t eat until the guests arrive.
(We have to wait; the guests must arrive first.)

- I’ll finish my homework by 7 PM.
(I will complete it at some point before 7 PM.)
I’ll keep working on my homework until 7 PM.
(I will stop working on it when the clock hits 7 PM.) - We need to leave by 10 AM.
